Ground Breaking and Ribbon Cutting Events

Ground Breaking and Ribbon Cutting events are an excellent way to mark a milestone in the development of an organization. Having worked in economic development and higher education, I have planned more 'milestone' events than I can count.

The key to making these a success is bringing something unique to the occasion that relates to the core mission of the event. For instance, at the groundbreaking of the Advance Manufacturing Lab, we gave out 3D printed keychains that incorporated the new brand.

'Must Haves' for a successful groundbreaking or ribbon cutting are:

  • Location with view of building or build site

  • Industrial tent for shade and rain cover

  • Professional sound including a Mult box for press to plug into.  Multiple microphones on a podium look messy. You worked hard to brand your event, don't skimp here!

  • Notes for speakers. If you are not personally writing each speech, make sure to send them an outline in advance and clarify who is acting as the 'MC.'

  • Offer a tour or provide renderings for attendees. What is 'show and tell' without the 'show'
